Maruti strike continues for 13th day
October 19th, 2011 - 11:45 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 19 (IANS) The strike at automobile giant Maruti Suzuki’s Manesar plant continued for the 13th day Wednesday with no sign of the management or workers relenting to end the stand-off.
The two sides had held talks Monday but failed to make any headway.
“The talks were held again today (Wednesday),” a senior Maruti Suzuki official told IANS. The Haryana state government is also involved in the negotiations.
Meanwhile, production has started at the Manesar and Gurgaon plants, with the company bringing in temporary workers at the Manesar facility to help roll out its best selling Swift model.
“The Manesar plant had started with 180 workers yesterday (Tuesday). They were from among those who were not participating in the strike. The number of workers went up to 600 from 400 Wednesday. All of them had stayed away from the strike,” said the official.
The Manesar facility produced 200 units from the average 1,200 units per day.
The Gurgaon plant managed to roll out 1,650 units Wednesday, down from the 2,800 vehicles it produces daily on an average. The factory had been closed Friday and Saturday as workers at Suzuki Powertrain India Limited (SPIL), its supplier of diesel engines and transmissions, struck work in support of the stir at the Manesar plant.
Partial operations have since begun at SPIL.
“In all, the company produced 300 Swift cars in Gurgaon as well Manesar plants Wednesday. Over 1 lakh customers have placed orders for the Swift and are waiting for delivery,” the company said in a statement.
However, parent Suzuki’s two-wheeler factory continued to be shut amid a strike called by the workforce in support of the Manesar stir.
Workers at the Manesar plant went on strike Oct 7 to demand the reinstatement of 44 suspended co-workers who were not taken back after an earlier 33-day impasse with the management ended Oct 1.
Continued labour troubles and increased competition from other automakers have resulted in the Maruti Suzuki stock weakening considerably in the recent past. It fell to a 52-week low last week.
