March on farmers’ rights reaches Chandigarh
December 3rd, 2010 - 1:15 am ICT by IANSChandigarh, Dec 2 (IANS) A nationwide march aimed at drawing attention towards the need to protect the interests of farmers reached Chandigarh Thursday evening, an NGO activist said.
The march, Kisan Swaraj Yatra (KSY), started from the Sabarmati Gandhi Ashram in Gujarat Oct 2 and it would culminate at Rajghat, Delhi, Dec 11 after passing through 20 different states.
“We want all sections of society to come together to defend the food and agriculture independence of the country,” said Umendra Dutt, executive director of NGO Kheti Virasat Mission.
“The government should think about the farmer rather than the multi-national corporations (MNCs) and foreign governments,” Dutt said.
Academics, students and agriculture scientists and noted singer Rabbi Shergill welcomed the participants of the KSY here.
While talking to reporters, Shergill said: “Today India faces an unprecedented challenge to their food autonomy from the nefarious designs of agro-MNCs, which are enjoying full support of our politicians.”
