Mumbai, Nov 23 (IANS) The Maharashtra government Wednesday invited request for qualification (RFQ) for the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL), a bridge across the Arabian Sea which will link Mumbai island with the mainland near Raigad, an official said.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which will oversee the execution of the 22-km MTHL, the country’s second bridge across the sea after the Rajiv Gandhi Bandra Worli Sea Link, invited the RFQ for the proposed Rs.8,800 crore ($1,760 million) project.

An MMRDA official said that the last date for receiving queries and pre-application conference is Dec 12, while the final applications would be received by Feb 7, 2012.

Earlier this year, the MMRDA had received proposals from internationally renowned consultancy firms for the techno-economic feasibility for the ambitious MTHL project, before it was given the clearance by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.

According to present indications, the MTHL would be a cable-stayed eight-lane bridge in which a railway line is also likely to be included.

Of the proposed 22-km length, the length of the main sea-bridge would be around 16.5 km and the length of approach viaducts would be 5.5 km. The link would support a six lane (3×3) carriageway which would enable high-speed movement of traffic.

Similar cable-stayed sea bridges are: Hangzhou Bay Bridge in China (36 km) and the
King Fahd Causeway, Saudi Arabia (26 km).
