Ghaziabad, Oct 4 (IANS) Try and figure out this whodunit: Rs.2.9 million was found missing from the state treasury in this Uttar Pradesh town Saturday but was recovered within hours after police questioned three employees, a senior police officer said.The cash was found missing at 9.45 a.m. and was found at 4 p.m.
After extensive questioning of three employees, the cash was recovered from a cupboard in the treasury office, Superintendent of Police Vijay Bhushan said.
However, chief treasury officer Vimal Kumar told IANS: “Our staff forgot the place where the cash was kept, but by the evening a clerk remembered and it was found in an almirah.”
Kumar said chief cashier Mukesh Saxena, cashier Bijendra Jain and assistant cashier who is also named Bijendra Jain deposited over Rs. 36.5 million in a locker Friday. When they unlocked the currency chest Saturday morning, Rs.2.9 million was found missing, he said.
District magistrate Deepak Agrawal also confirmed that the cash was missing.
Surprisingly, no FIR has been lodged and no further details about the mysterious lost and found story were divulged to the media.
