Loos at monuments to get a shine
December 15th, 2009 - 9:47 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Dec 15 (IANS) Toilets at historical monuments in the capital and in the surrounding tourist circuit are set for a spanking new look.
This was announced after the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) signed an memorandum of understanding for maintenance of public amenities at these sites.
The move was also taken keeping in mind next year’s Commonwealth Games in the Indian capital when over 100,000 tourists are expected to visit the country.
The ASI, which is is the premier organisation for the archaeological researches and protection of the cultural heritage of the nation, maintaines 3,650 ancient monuments in India.
As per the agreement, IATO will not only refurbish toilets in these protected sites, but will also carry out day-to-day maintenance.
ASI’s role will be to ensure that the infrastructure is more user friendly and accessible for the physically challenged. The agreement is for five years.
Tourism Minister Kumari Selja along with State Minister for Tourism Sultan Ahmed and other tourism officials were present at the ceremony.
Apart from Taj Mahal, Agra also houses the Fatehpuri Sikri and Agra Fort, which is a World Heritage site. Delhi too has its share of great historical monuments, including the Red Fort, Humayun Tomb and Qutub Minar - all the three are also World Heritage sites.
