New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) The Lok Sabha was adjourned until noon Friday after opposition members disrupted the proceedings demanding a better deal for sugarcane farmers.
As soon as the house assembled at 11 a.m., opposition MPs mainly of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) walked towards Speaker Meira Kumar shouting anti-government slogans over its sugarcane pricing policy.
Thousands of sugarcane farmers gathered in the Indian capital Thursday over the issue. They were protesting against a government move that will raise sugarcane prices from Rs.108 to Rs.129.85 a quintal. They want it to be raised to Rs.280 per quintal in view of rising sugar prices.
The BJP had brought an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha and demanded suspension of the question hour.
The speaker turned down the BJP motion and kept requesting the protesting MPs to return to their seats and let the house function.
But the intransigent MPs kept shouting “kala kanoon vapas lo!”, referring to a sugarcane ordinance of October. Meira Kumar then adjourned the Lok Sabha until 12 noon.
