Land protests: Reward announced for five farmer leaders

Greater Noida, May 9 (IANS) After farmer leader Manvir Singh Teotia, the Uttar Pradesh Police Monday announced rewards for the arrest of five others who have been blamed for the violence over land acquisition here which has claimed four lives so far.

Additional Director General of Police Gurbachan Lal said that Premvir and Neeraj Malik, both residents of Bhatta-Parsaul village, have a reward of Rs.15,000 each for their capture, while Gaj Singh, Kiran Pal and Manoj have a bounty of Rs.10,000 each.

Four people, two policemen and two farmers, were killed when rioting farmers protesting against land acquisition for the proposed 165-km Yamuna Expressway exchanged fire with police in Bhatta-Parsaul near here Saturday.

Gautam Budh Nagar District Magistrate Deepal Agrawal and senior Superintendent of Police Surya Narain Singh were among those injured.

The agitation turned violent Saturday when police tried to rescue three state roadways employees who were taken hostage by the farmers.

A reward of Rs.50,000 has been announced for the capture of farmers’ leader Manvir Singh Teotia, who, according to police, is the mastermind behind the protests.
