Kolkata, Dec 23 (IANS) Lack of availability of land is posing a major hindrance in developing tourism in West Bengal, a top official said Thursday.”A major impediment in developing tourism in the state is the lack of land availability,” West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director T.V.N. Rao said at a seminar here.

He also stressed the need for enhanced use of information technology for better publicity and marketing of “tourist attractions”.

Former secretary of union tourism ministry Sujit Banerjee said bureaucratic bottlenecks were the prime hurdles in realising the country’s potential in the sector.

“A hotelier needs 64 clearances to get the approval for setting up a project. We need to have a single window clearance.

“To counter this problem, a proposal to constitute a Hospitality Development and Promotion Board both at the central and state level has been made. The proposal is awaiting cabinet approval,” he said.
