Lacklustre Sensex trade (Lead)

Sensex Mumbai, May 11 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities markets Wednesday continued to trade on a dull note amid tepid Asian markets.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 18,572.61 points, was ruling at 18,545.37 points — up 32.42 points or 0.18 percent from its previous close at 18,512.77 points.

The Sensex rose to an intra-day high of 18,580.30 points and slipped to a low of 18,454.93 points.

The 50-scrip S&P; CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange was also trading lacklustre at 5,548.05 points, up 0.12 percent.

The BSE midcap index was ruling 0.48 percent up and the BSE smallcap index 0.55 percent up.

Realty, IT and metal stocks rose. Energy scrips were weak.

The market breadth was tilted towards the positive with 1,448 stocks advancing, 1,054 on the decline and 129 unchanged.

Among gainers on the Sensex were Hero Honda, DLF, Sterlite Industries and Hindalco. The losers included NTPC, Maruti Suzuki, Tata Power and ONGC.

Asian markets were subdued in the wake of data coming from China that suggested that growth in the fastest growing economy in the world could be slowing down.

The Nikkei of the Japanese stock exchange closed 0.46 percent higher at 9,864.26 points, while the Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was trading 0.1 percent up at 23,358.45 points.

The Chinese markets were ruling 0.15 percent down at 2,886.39 points.
