Kerala police questioning suspects in Muthoot scion’s murder
August 23rd, 2009 - 10:03 pm ICT by IANSAlappuzha (Kerala), Aug 23 (IANS) Kerala police Sunday said that several people were being questioned in connection with the murder of 32-year-old Paul M. George, the son of M.G. George Muthoot, a prominent businessman who heads one of the four groups of the Muthoot family business house.
George, a bachelor, was waylaid on the Changnacherry-Alappuzha road on the midnight of Friday when he was travelling with three others. In the melee, George was stabbed, according to Manu, one of the three who was travelling with him.
George’s driver, who was following behind in another vehicle, took the injured man who was lying on the road to hospital. However, George succumbed to the stab injuries.
Speaking to reporters, Inspector General of Police Vinson M. Paul said, “It is too early to reveal anything.”
“There are lots of things that are being probed and several people are being questioned. At the appropriate time we will tell you,” said Paul.
Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told reporters Sunday evening that the probe was progressing well. “Tomorrow, all the details of those involved in the murder would be revealed,” the minister said.
Eyebrows were raised when the vehicle in which George was travelling was found abandoned near Kollam and it was taken into custody by the Chavara Police.
Even though the police are yet to confirm the role played by two known lumpen elements - Om Prakash and P.Rajesh, who are believed to have been travelling along with George at the time of the incident, unconfirmed reports indicate that the two are in police custody.
Meanwhile, the police have also taken into custody 11 people from Changnacherry and are questioning them.
A close relative of George told IANS that the funeral service was held Sunday evening at Kozhencherry in Pathanamthitta district.
“Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan took part in the funeral. He said that police have cast their net and the guilty would be booked soon. So far, we are happy with the progress of the investigation,” said the relative.
The St George’s School in Delhi is owned by the family. The principal of the school is Sara George, mother of the deceased. His father is the Sabha secretary of the Kottayam headquartered Orthodox Church.
