Kerala IT firm plans carbon credit trading platform
January 14th, 2010 - 6:38 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 14 (IANS) IBS Software, headquartered at the Technopark IT park here, will put in place a carbon credit online trading platform for the aviation sector next fiscal.
“A lot of work has been done on this and it will be operational in the coming financial year,” IBS chairman and chief executive V.K. Mathews told reporters here Thursday.
“This would be an IT tool for airlines to find out how much emission their aircraft generate and with the European Commission all set to penalise polluting aircraft, those that have the least emission will be given carbon credits,” Mathews said.
“Our e-commerce platform will enable airlines to trade carbon credits,” he added.
The European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union, has begun working out a plan to control carbon emissions at all airports in the 27 member-countries by 2012.
The global aviation industry is seen as a major pollutant.
An aircraft’s emission rate is directly proportional to the load and weather conditions, as well as its age, which means the older the aircraft, the more it pollutes.
