Jammu, Oct 10 (IANS) The Jammu and Kashmir government Monday fixed the minimum support price of paddy at Rs.1,080 per quintal for the current kharif season.

Agriculture Minister Ghulam Hassan Mir told a meeting of officers here that due to likely bumper crop this year, a surplus quantity of paddy is likely to be harvested and thus its procurement be ensured immediately.

“We want the farmers to be the real beneficiaries and the government officers to ensure that the farmers get their due. I will be personally monitoring the whole process of procurement,” Mir told IANS.

“I have instructed the officers at a meeting here that no time should be wasted and it’s our combined duty that the things go the farmers’ way,” Mir said.

The minister said he emphasized the need to make all out efforts to ensure that the farmers get MSP and there is no distress sale of paddy by them. He will be visiting various areas in the region to monitor the process.
