Jammu, Jan 18 (IANS) The fall of rupee against the dollar presents a “window of opportunity” for Jammu and Kashmir, which can boost its income from tourism and export of handicrafts, a minister said Wednesday.
The state’s Finance Minister Abdul Rahim Rather, who met union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi, said the state can turn economic challenges into opportunities.
According to a government release here, Rather said appropriate budgetary interventions at this stage will boost export of handicrafts, consumer goods and food items.
“Tourism is yet another sector which can be given a boost in the backdrop of fall of the rupee,” Rather said, adding that the peaceful summer of 2011 saw a record 1.2 million tourists visiting Kashmir.
He also sought adequate funding for the proposed Rs.19,000 crore Kashmir railway project in this year’s Budget.
