Chennai, May 12 (IANS) Kanimozhi, DMK MP and daughter of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, along with Kalaignar TV Managing Director Sharad Kumar Thursday appeared before income tax (IT) authorities in response to summons by the department.

Named by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as co-conspirator in the 2G spectrum scam and awaiting the bail decision of a trial court in New Delhi, Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar appeared before Ramakrishna Bandi, deputy director IT. They were asked to explain the financial dealings of the channel company.

Both Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar had been given exemption by the trial court in New Delhi from marking their attendance Thursday and Friday.

Kanimozhi managed to give the waiting media the slip after the deliberations with the IT officials.

The CBI had named Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar as co-conspirators in the chargesheet after it traced Rs.214 crore as an illegal money trail.

A representative of Dayalu Ammal, the wife of Karunanidhi, also appeared before the IT authorities.

According to officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, the income tax officials questioned Kanimozhi and Sharad Kumar on the receipt on Rs.214 crore from Cineyug.

They also questioned them about IT returns about the earlier years from 2004 onwards.

The official said the three will be issued summons again. “They can appear in person or depute their representative,” they said.

“They answered all the questions we aked,” the official said.

The money trail moved from Dynamix to Kusegaon and then on to Cineyug, all part of the DB Group that promoted Swan Telecom, ending with Kalaignar TV that gets its name from how Karunanidhi is popularly called - a scholar.

The channel company had earlier stated that the Rs.214 crore was a loan and paid back with interest.
