January 4th, 2011 - 9:21 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Jan 4 (IANS) Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi, who evaded being questioned Tuesday by the CBI regarding the financial irregularities in the conduct of the October Games, is likely to be quizzed Wednesday, an official said. There was speculation that Kalmadi would appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Tuesday. He was summoned for questioning Dec 31, 2010, by the CBI but he offered to appear for it any time after Jan 3, 2011.
“We have no idea when he (Kalmadi) will appear for questioning,” a CBI official told IANS earlier in the day. However, he indicated later that Kalmadi was likely to be questioned Wednesday.
Commonwealth Games Organising Committee secretary general Lalit Bhanot and Kalmadi’s close aide Manoj Bhore were questioned by the CBI at its office here last week.
The CBI raided the Delhi and Pune homes of Kalmadi Dec 24 as well as the Organising Committee’s office in the capital, two months after the mega event ended amid allegations of major financial irregularities.
Bhore’s house in Pune was also searched earlier.
Alleged irregularities in the Organising Committee’s contract of Rs.107 crore with a firm to procure the Time Scoring Board are being investigated by CBI.
Kalmadi claimed that he had done no wrong and was willing to face any inquiry.
Three other aides of Kalmadi — T.S. Darbari, Sanjay Mohindroo and M. Jayachandran — are already in custody in connection with another financial scam related to the Games.
