JSW group plans entry into power plant boiler making
February 1st, 2010 - 8:15 pm ICT by IANSChennai, Feb 1 (IANS) Aiming to become an integrated power generation equipment manufacturer, the $3.7 billion JSW group is in talks with a couple of boiler manufacturers for a joint venture.
The company is also mulling an entry into balance of plant (BOP- all power generation equipment other than boiler, turbine and generator) segment.
“We are in talks with boiler manufacturers in Europe and Asia for a joint venture. However, they prefer to wait and see how the power generation projects proceed in India,” S.S. Rao, joint managing director and CEO, JSW Energy Ltd told reporters on the sidelines of a press meet here Monday.
According to Rao, several parties have expressed their interest to join hands with the JSW group to manufacture equipment for handling coal, ash and also boiler feed pumps.
Already the JSW group has a joint venture with Japanese Toshiba to manufacture steam turbine generator (STG) sets.
The Rs.800 crore plant is being built by Toshiba JSW Turbine & Generator Ltd in which 75 percent stake will be held by the Japanese group with JSW holding the balance.
Asked about the company’s ongoing power projects Rao said: “Land acquisition is on for the 2×800 MW project at Ichapur in West Bengal and in Chhattisgarh for 2×660 MW project. Construction work on both the projects will begin next year. For the Ratnagiri project in Maharashtra, financial bids from equipment manufacturer were opened last December and it will be finalised once we get the final nod from Environment Ministry.”
He said the company has applied for coal linkage for its proposed 2×800 MW plant in Jharkhand.
