Jharkhand’s rural areas hit by Maoist shutdown

Ranchi, April 23 (IANS) A shutdown called by Maoists in Jharkhand Saturday to protest the ongoing demolition drive hit life in rural areas of the state.

The long route buses did not play, and remained at the bus stand in Ranchi. The national highways wore a deserted look, while mining activities and transportation of coal was affected in Maoist hit districts.

The shutdown affected lives in Khuti, Simdega, Gumla, Palamau and other districts.

Over 4,600 illegal structures have been demolished in Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro and other districts in the last one month on the directive of the Jharkhand High Court. The drive has left more than 100,000 people homeless.

In Ranchi, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha-Prajatantrik (JVM-P) president and Giridih MP Babulal Marandi sat on one day sit in strike to protest the demolition drive. Marandi, the state’s first chief minister, demanded that the state government should first rehabilitate the affected people before demolishing the illegal constructions.

Thousands of people residing on land of Heavy Engineering Corporation (HEC) here sat on roads to protest the demolition, affecting its work as well as that of the state government since the main secretariat, assembly and other important government buildings are situated in the HEC premises. Considering the protest, the HEC management has decided to postpone demolitions for a few days.
