Jharkhand to launch scheme to protect girl child
October 13th, 2011 - 3:20 pm ICT by IANSRanchi, Oct 13 (IANS) The Jharkhand government has approved Rs.108 crore for the Mukhyamantri Ladli Laxmi Yojna (MLLY) to promote welfare of the girl child born to a below poverty line (BPL) family, her education and safe motherhood.
Chief Minister Arjun Munda will launch the scheme Nov 15, the day the state came into existence 11 years ago. The plan was approved by the cabinet Wednesday night and would cover those born after the launch, said Jharkhand cabinet secretary Aditya Swaroop after the meeting.
Under the plan, the state government will deposit Rs.6,000 every year into a post office savings account in the girl’s name till she is five years. When she enters Class 6, she will get a one time payment of Rs.2,000, in Class 9 she will get Rs.4,000 and Rs.7,500 in Class 11.
The state will provide Rs.200 per month as stipend when she is in Class 12. Besides, the government will provide Rs.60,000 at the time of her marriage.
There are certain conditions — there should be only two children, the girl should not get married before she turns 18 or suffer a break in studies till she passes out of school.
Officials estimate that the scheme will benefit 33 lakh BPL families.
