Jharkhand sex ratio above national average

Ranchi, Sep 21 (IANS) The sex ratio, or number of females per 1,000 males, in Jharkhand stands at 947 for 2011, against the national average of 940, official data showed Wednesday.

“Jharkhand’s overall sex ratio is 947, against the national average of 940,” said Sunil Kumar Barnawal, director of census operations of Jharkhand.

“The sex ratio in rural and urban areas in Jharkhand is 960 and 908, respectively, against national average of 947 and 926,” he added.

Talking to reporters here, Barnawal said West Singhbhum district recorded the highest sex ratio at 1,014 women per 1,000 men, while Chatra district lodged the lowest at 868.

In terms of child sex ratio (0-6 years), too, the state’s figure of 943 is better than the all-India figure of 941.

Jharkhand’s population increased by 22.34 percent and stood at 3.29 crore in 2011.

The state lags behind in literacy rate, which stands at 67.63 percent against the national average of 74.04 percent.

Jharkhand is considered one of the most backward states of the country, with nearly half of the population living below poverty line.
