Jet Airways to discontinue flights to ChinaOctober 10th, 2008 - 10:08 pm ICT by IANS
New Delhi, Oct 10 (IANS) Jet Airways will discontinue flights to Shanghai and instead fly to the US via London from Jan 13 next year, the airline announced Friday. The airlines in a statement said it was folding up its China operations - the Mumbai-Shanghai-San Fransisco service - from Jan 13 next year to minimise the losses on uneconomical routes. The flights on the route ar present caters to passengers bouns for and from Shanghai and San Fransisco.
The country’s largest private airline sought and launched its China service on June 14 thuis year after it received then fligth clearances from China on April 19, 2008, following the conclusion of a bilateral agreement between India and China. Jet Airways was keen on Shanghai as the gateway to the east as well as to the west coast of the US.
“The passenger traffic between India and San Fransisco would be served through the airline’s London gateway in cooperation with our partner carrier, United Airlines of the US,” it said.
Jet’s Shanghai-San Fransisco service has already been curtailed on many occasions owing to fall in passengers and other problems. The airlines’ chief executive officer, Wolfgang Prock-Schauer earlier said there has been capacity reduction in sectors and that these sectors were undergoing losses.
The airlines’s move also comes in the wake of similar steps taken by major carriers worldwide, including India’s flagship carrier, Air India.
