Japanese traders allege that China has blocked rare earth exports

Sep 24 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to reports, China has blocked rare earth exports to Japan. It is expected that the blocking is due to detention of a Chinese boat captain. But Beijing has denied these reports.

A spokesman from Sojitz in Tokyo at Japanese trading house said that they heard about this news from their officials regarding the suspension of the shipping of rare earths to Japan on September 21. Also an anonymous trader from different trading house has wished to confirm the news and said the trading partners of China have stopped rare earth exports to Japan. He also said that on September 22 in Beijing, commerce ministry of China and Chinese companies gathered to discuss on issue to stop rare earth export to Japan and now licenses of the Japan traders would not be renewed.

According to a trader, “On September 22, Chinese companies who have licenses for exporting to Japan were gathered in Beijing by China’s commerce ministry. There were discussions of stopping (rare earth) exports to Japan.”

Officials form Japanese trading house told AFP that reports of suspension is true but still talks are on over the rare earth exports. Whereas China’s Commerce ministry has negated reports regarding rare earth export minerals to Japan in the New York Times.
