Indo-Bangla chamber seeks land for Indian SEZ
May 8th, 2011 - 11:22 am ICT by IANSDhaka, May 8 (IANS) Leaders of the India-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry have sought allocation of 100 acres of land from the Bangladesh government on the border with India to establish an exclusive Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for Indian investors.
The proposed area in Sunamganj is located in north-eastern Bangladesh bordering India’s Meghalaya state.
“We urged the government to allocate 100 acres of land in Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj where we want to set up a SEZ to create opportunities for Indian investors in the manufacturing sector,” IBCCI president Abdul Matlub Ahmed said Saturday while closing of the second India-Bangladesh Trade Fair-2011.
“The SEZ will provide space for 50 Indian enterprises, including the big corporate houses like Tata, Birla and Reliance, to set up manufacturing units,” he added.
Shyamol Gupta, Confederation of Indian Industry representative and special adviser to the Tata Group, said: “There is a huge opportunity in Bangladesh for the Indian businessmen to invest in sectors like engineering, energy and power generation, environment, IT and infrastructural development.”
He said that they would facilitate Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters’ Association to set up a showroom to showcase products.
“India has to import more products of different categories from Bangladesh if the huge trade imbalance is to be reduced. A business delegation from Bangladesh will visit Delhi to discuss the matter,” said Matlub Ahmed was quoted as saying by New Age.
The IBCCI, with the support of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, organised a three-day trade fair to showcase products of both the countries.
