Indian equities rise, Sensex closes 513 points higher (Roundup)

Mumbai, June 24 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities markets Friday closed 513 points higher on robust all-round buying. Global markets too were in the green.
The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 17,804.94 points, closed at 18,240.68 points, up 513.19 points or 2.89 percent from its previous close at 17,727.49 points.
The Sensex, which has languished below the 18,000-point mark since the last six trading days, touched an intra-day high of 18,268.95 points.
The 50-scrip S&P; CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange too ended higher at 5,471.25 points, up 2.84 percent.
Broader markets closed in the green as well with the BSE midcap index closing 2.26 percent higher and the BSE smallcap index ending 1.8 percent up.
The market breadth was positive, with 1,984 stocks advancing, 852 on the decline and 124 remaining unchanged.
Realty, metal and IT were among the major gainers, while consumer durables ended on the losing side.
According to data available with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), foreign institutional investors Friday bought stocks worth $107.65 million.
Among gainers on the 30-scrip Sensex were: Hero Honda, up 6.07 percent at Rs.1,866.15; SBI, up 5.95 percent at Rs.2,288.15; Jaiprakash Associates, up 4.55 percent at Rs.79.25 and HDFC, up 4.46 percent at Rs.666.95.
Prominent among the losers were Reliance Infra, down 0.84 percent at Rs.530.45, while RIL ended flat.
Chinese stock markets led gainers at Asian bourses after Chinese premier Wen Jiabao was quoted as saying that inflation is being tamed.
The Nikkei of the Japanese stock exchange closed 0.85 percent higher at 9,678.71 points, while the Hang Seng of the Hong Kong stock exchange ended 1.9 percent up at 22,171.95 points.
Also, the Chinese Shanghai composite index moved up 2.16 percent to close at 2,746.21 points.
European bourses too were ruling in the green.
Around midday, Britain’s FTSE was up 0.83 percent at 5,721.7 points and the French CAC 40 was trading 0.98 percent lower at 3,824.84 points.
The German DAX was ruling 0.91 percent up at 7,214.29 points.
