India to send aid to conflict-torn Kyrgyzstan
July 1st, 2010 - 6:27 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 1 (IANS) India is sending humanitarian assistance to Kyrgyzstan where ethnic violence has left several hundred people dead and has forced an estimated 400,000 Uzbeks to flee their homes.
Indian Air Force’s IL -76 military cargo aircraft with humanitarian assistance load will take off for Kyrgyzstan Friday morning, an air force official told IANS, but didn’t give the details of the aid.
The Indian assistance comes as the central Asian country continues to struggle with the fallout from bloody ethnic clashes that started last month.
The United Nations has appealed for $71 million in aid for Kyrgyzstan. The US has committed to provide immediate assistance of over $6.5 million.
Clashes between Kyrgyz and Uzbeks, who account for about 15 percent of Kyrgyzstan’s population, broke out in the southern city of Osh June 11.
According to the UN around 400,000 people were forced to fled to neighbouring Uzbekistan during the clashes. But most of the displaced people have returned to Kyrgyzstan so far after promise of help from the government.
