India to push for Kyoto Protocol’s extension
September 15th, 2011 - 9:14 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS) India along with other developing countries will push for a second commitment period for Kyoto Protocol - the only legally binding framework on reducing emissions - at the forthcoming climate change conference in Durban, Environment Minister Jayanthi Natarajan said Thursday.
Sharing details of informal ministerial consultation on climate change held in South Africa, Natarajan said all developing countries are looking forward for operationalisation of decisions taken at the climate change conference in Mexico last year.
“One of the important principles enshrined in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is the principle of common but differentiated responsibility and a concrete manifestation of this principle is the Kyoto Protocol. Our endeavour is to strive for developed countries to agree to extension of it,” she said.
Kyoto Protocol is the only legal framework that calls for emission cuts by developed countries. It expires in Dec 2012 and developing countries want its extension while countries like the US, Japan and a few other countries want a new treaty.
“For the Durban Conference of Parties, we look forward to the operationalisation of Cancun decisions and to ensure that some of the issues relating to the Bali Roadmap are not lost sight of,” Natarajan said.
“Issues related to finance, technology transfer, adaptation and forestry are key deliverables for the Durban Conference,” she added.
