Agartala, June 9 (IANS) Construction of a 10-km railway track linking Agartala with Bangladesh’s southeastern city of Akhaurah is set to begin later this year, an official said here Thursday.
The Agartala-Akhaurah railway link would be the second railway linkage between India and Bangladesh after the Kolkata-Dhaka train service.
A high level team of Indian government, led by Railway Board additional member B.N. Rajsekhar, visited the proposed site Thursday.
“The team will submit a report to the central government,” Tripura government’s Transport Secretary Kishore Ambuly told IANS.
He said the project’s estimated cost is around Rs.250 crore, and India will also lay the track on Bangladesh’s side at its own expense.
Agartala is the newest station of the Indian Railways, and came up on the country’s rail map in October 2008.
The agreement for the rail link was signed between Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Manmohan Singh during her visit to India in January last year.
