India, Nigeria to boost economic, energy ties

New Delhi, March 15 (IANS) India and Nigeria, Africa’s largest oil-producing country and the continent’s most populous nation, will hold wide-ranging talks Wednesday to boost their economic and energy ties.

Nigerian Foreign Minister Odein Ajumogobia arrived in India Tuesday afternoon on a four-day visit, during which he will discuss ways to improve economic linkages as well as important regional issues.

Ajumogobia will co-chair the fifth meeting of the India-Nigeria Joint Commission on March 16. The Indian delegation will be led by External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna.

The joint commission will review the status of bilateral ties between the two countries, as well as propose ways of strengthening economic ties.

Besides, the two ministers will discuss matters related to regional and global importance. The volatile situation in Libya is expected to figure during the talks.

The two sides are also expected to discuss the forthcoming India-Africa Forum Summit that will be held in Addis Ababa in May.

The Nigerian foreign minister will deliver a speech on ‘India & Nigeria, the largest democracies in Asia and Africa, as agents of Inter-regional Cooperation/Global Peace and Development’ at the India International Centre here Thursday.

Nigeria is India’s largest trading partner in Africa as well as the biggest market for Indian goods in Africa. The bilateral trade for 2011-12 is expected to be around $12 billion.

The Nigerian minister will also meet Indian Commerce Minister Anand Sharma and Petroleum Minister S. Jaipal Reddy.
