New Delhi, June 20 (IANS) India and Japan will witness a significant rise in their air traffic from March 2010. While Japan has agreed to add 20 more flights per week for Indian carriers, India will allow 14 additional flights from Japan to Delhi and Mumbai. The mutual air agreement was reached between the officials of India and Japan in Tokyo this week. At present, Indian carriers fly eight times a week to Japan while Japanese carriers fly seven times to Indian cities.

The Indian delegation was led by the joint secretary in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, R.K. Singh, while the Japanese delegation was led by Ryuhei Maeda, the deputy director general of the civil aviation bureau.

A government statement said Friday that the Japanese authorities have assured India that they would make an effort to allot 28 additional slots at the Narita or Haneda airports.

With this arrangement, the two countries expect a significant rise in traffic on the Indian-Japan air route. With addition of capacity, the fares are also likely to be cheaper.
