Idea Cellular booked for not keeping records of GPRS users
November 8th, 2009 - 2:53 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Chandigarh, Nov 8 (IANS) Telecom company Idea Cellular has been booked for not keeping records of customers using its GPRS service after a woman accused an unidentified client of creating an objectionable profile of her and posting it on the net, police said Sunday.
The firm was providing GPRS connections to various clients through a single Internet Protocol (IP) address.
“We registered a case against Idea telecom company late Saturday. We had sought their help in solving a case and asked for the details of one of their accused customers,” Chandigarh Superintendent of Police (crime) Madhur Verma said here.
“Despite our repeated reminders, they failed to provide us information and we found that they had not kept the records properly, which is mandatory for them to maintain. Therefore, we have registered a case and very soon we will take action against the company officials,” he said.
The cyber crime investigation cell of Chandigarh Police has booked Idea under various sections of the Information and Technology Act.
“During our investigation, we found that Idea’s office in neighbouring Mohali town was offering the GPRS connection through HFCL (Connect). Idea was unable to provide the details of its customer as they were providing GPRS (General Packet Radio System) connection to various clients from the same IP address,” said an official of cyber cell.
“It is compulsory for them to keep the records of their customers and moreover they cannot provide service to multiple users from the same IP address. Police can any time arrest the senior officials of Idea for interrogation,” he added.
A medical student, studying in a prestigious college here, had complained in July that someone had created her objectionable profile on a social networking site. In her complaint, she said the accused had posted her photographs and used offensive language in her profile to malign her.
During investigation, police discovered that her profile was created from some place in a Punjab town using a GPRS connection of Idea.
In the last few months, the cyber cell here has received many complaints in which miscreants had created scandalous profiles of women.
