However, the shadow of layoff still looms large over the big names in the IT sector including MNCs like IBM. It is being reported that computer giant IBM may show doors to a large number of workers employed at its Rochester complex. If it does happen, then its entire North American operation will get affected. The job cuts are part of what the company refers to as RA or resource actions. The news has been leaked by a group named Alliance@IBM which has been trying for bringing IBM workers under the umbrella of union.

The so called RA that has been used by the management of the company has been used several times in its history to implement forced retirement as well as periodic layoffs. As per the reports, the units of IBM affected by the RA are the Software Group, the Systems & Technology Group, GBS and GTS units. However, the IBM management has always stressed that the RAs are part of the normal work policy. Alliance said in a statement that around 500 employees of the company has been asked to leave and the number is expected to rise with time.

The Alliance representatives have revealed that IBM fired more than 10000 employees last year in Canada and the USA. Already a number of IBM employees have registered with Alliance web site pledging their support. A small part of the IBM workforce has also become paid members. The IT giant has declined to comment on the issue.
