Hyundai workers end strike after reaching deal with management
July 28th, 2009 - 9:06 pm ICT by IANSChennai, July 28 (IANS) The six-day workers’ strike at the Hyundai Motor plant near here came to an end Tuesday following an agreement between employees and the company management.
The agreement has been signed in the presence of Labour Minister T.M. Anbarasan at the state secretariat, a company official said.
“The agreement between the union representatives and the management was signed this evening. We have agreed to bring back here the nine transferred workers,” Rajiv Mitra, head of corporate communications, told IANS.
Over 1,000 employees belonging to the Hyundai Motor India Employees Union (HMIEU) started the strike last Thursday against a wage agreement the management signed with the Workers’ Committee.
According to the union, the committee, set up by the company management, does not represent the workers.
Union officials said they decided to withdraw the strike after the management agreed to pay “all workers wages as per its agreement with the Workers’ Committee”.
“Earlier the management said the revised wages will be paid only to those who sign an acceptance letter for the wage pact which the union members declined to sign,” union general secretary Y.S. Chinnaraja told IANS.
Besides bringing back the the nine transferred employees to the factory at Irrungattukottai near here, the company will also take back some 20 dismissed employees, he said.
“The remaining 60 dismissed employees are expected to be taken back gradually on the advice of the labour commissioner.”
Chinnaraja added that the two plants at Irrungattukottai will function normally from Wednesday morning.
