Mumbai, April 4 (IANS) The Hyundai’s i10 has bagged the 2008 Indian Car of the Year (ICOTY), awarded by JK Tyre. A panel of 12 automotive journalists judged the car on various criteria like price, fuel efficiency, design, comfort, safety, handling and technical innovation to decide the winner, according to a JK Tyre announcement here Friday evening.
“With the growth of transportation system the Automotive Industry of India is also growing at rapid speed, occupying an important place on the ‘canvas’ of Indian economy. The objective of forming ICOTY was to recognise the innovation and technology that is driving the industry,” said Arun Bajoria, president of JK Tyre and Industries.
“The award has been instituted in line with the American Car of the Year or the European or Australian Car of the Year awards, bringing us at par internationally in recognising the efforts put in by the auto industry in India,” he added.
Into its third year running, ICOTY is an expert, independent judgment of all new cars on the Indian market, judged by a panel of senior motoring journalists from leading automobile magazines in India.
This year, 12 automotive journalists from seven publications - Auto India, Autocar India, Business Standard Motoring, Car India, Overdrive, Top Gear India and What Car - got together to deliberate on the Indian Car of the Year 2008 and to crown the most outstanding new car to go on sale in the 12 months preceding the date of the title.
“Hyundai i10 is a contemporary car that has been fine-tuned for Indian conditions and made available at a good price point. Commendable ride comfort, safe dynamics, comprehensive active and passive features and good build quality ensured that it won the award by a handsome margin,” said Bijoy Kumar Y., editor, Business Standard Motoring, who was chairman of ICOTY-2008.
ICOTY as a body was formed to recognise exceptional level of competence, innovation and technology in the auto and auto ancillary Industry development.
