Humana Inc. To Cut 2,500 Jobs This Year

humanLouisville, Kentucky, Feb 18, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Health insurance company Humana Inc. is cutting down its workforce by 1,400 jobs this year with the aim of aligning the company’s size with that of its membership. The new initiative of the health insurer, which was revealed on Wednesday, would result in about 2,500 employees losing their jobs, which also takes into account about 750 job losses in its Louisville headquarters itself.

However, company officials have emphasized that around 1,140 positions would be added in some areas which include pharmacy management, medical-cost containment as well as specialty products. At the same time, in a statement that has been released by the company’s chief executive officer, it has been revealed that although the job cuts are regrettable, it was of imperative need. It has also been implied that the reduction in workforce was the direct consequence of aligning the company as it gets tuned with smaller enrollments. The health insurer has further defended its stand and has added that the restructuring would help it to establish a more efficient infrastructure and would provide it with resources for investment in growth opportunities.

While reacting to the large number of job cuts announced by Humana Inc., Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear has reiterated that the state is ready to provide the health insurer any assistance that it might require in its restructuring and at the same time would also help the individuals who would be rendered jobless owing to the company’s decision. Moreover, the governor also expressed his faith in the organization and added that the company would surely be emerging as a much stronger entity following the restructuring.
