Chennai, April 16 (IANS) The Bangalore-based realtor Alliance Group Thursday announced it will develop a housing project for senior citizens here, and claimed it would be the first of its kind in India.
“This is a unique residential project that offers 225 senior citizen-friendly lifestyle apartments, and incorporates safety and convenience features like anti-skid floors, grab bars in bathrooms, alarm buttons and wider passages,” said Alliance Group chairman and managing director Manoj Namburu.

Namburu claimed the project was the first of its kind in the country, saying the toilets would be designed to accommodate wheelchairs. “Senior citizens can also avail the services of a resident manager, service coordinator and various helpers provided there.”

The apartments, designed by Singaporean architect firm Surbana Corp, will be available in two sizes - a single-bedroom apartment of 650 square feet and a two-bedroom unit of 890 square feet. At the launch rate of Rs.2,999 per square feet, they cost Rs.19.49 lakh and Rs.26.69 lakh respectively.

These apartments, to be located near the posh Anna Nagar neighbourhood, would be part of a well-secured gated community with a community centre, parks, library and facilities for yoga, spiritual discourses and video conferencing through Skype.

To meet the residents’ medical needs, a 24×7 nursing centre with a doctor’s consultation room and an ambulance service through tie-ups with corporate hospitals would be in place, Namburu said.

The complex will have in its vicinity grocery and departmental stores, an ATM and a chemist’s shop. Maintenance and housekeeping services, a common pool of chauffeur-driven cars, and guest rooms on payment will also be provided for the residents.
