Honda ElementDec 5, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The compact crossover SUV Honda Element would be discontinued after the 2011 production year, automaker American Honda Motor Co. revealed earlier this week. The car company has confirmed that the next model year would be the last installment of the utility vehicle that would be manufactured, a news that has come as a huge disappointment to its niche fan base.

The compact crossover car was unveiled for the first time at the 2001 Detroit auto show and it was officially launched in the car market next year in the month of December. Following its launch, the utility vehicle was able to garner huge popularity among the car enthusiasts which resulted in the sales of the car reaching an all time high. However, after the first year when the sales reached something around 80,000, it failed to hold on to its popularity and ever since, the sales have plummeted considerably to an estimated 15,000 in 2009. This year, the sales of Honda Element further dipped with less than 15 per cent. Experts have reiterated that given the statistics, it does not come as a bolt from the blue that automaker American Honda Motor Co. took the decision to end the production of the once popular utility vehicle.

A press release that was issued by American Honda Motor Co. executive vice-president John Mendel read that Honda Element proved beyond doubt that ultimate functionality can in many occasions spur from ‘thinking inside the box.’ The American Honda Motor Co. executive vice-president also added that Honda Element was able to make boxy designs look extremely cool.
