Hindustan Aeronautics to set up unit in KeralaAugust 11th, 2008 - 11:02 pm ICT by IANS
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 11 (IANS) State-run aerospace major Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) announced Monday that it will set up a strategic electronics manufacturing factory in Kerala at an investment of Rs.2 billion ($47.6 million). The factory would come up on 200 acres at the Kinfra Industrial Park in Kasargod district, said a statement issued by the state-owned Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corp (Kinfra).
The foundation stone of the plant would be laid Aug 23 by Defence Minister A.K. Antony at the Kinfra Industrial Park, said the release.
The new factory is being planned as an extension of the Hyderabad avionics division of HAL. However, the facility may be converted into a full-fledged division in the future.
At present, the Hyderabad unit is manufacturing a wide variety of electronic equipment for areas like communication, radar, navigation, computers and electronic warfare.
The Kerala unit is expected to be operational in the third quarter of 2009-10 fiscal.
