Himachal to check construction of high-rise buildings
August 18th, 2010 - 7:58 pm ICT by IANSShimla, Aug 18 (IANS) The Himachal Pradesh government plans to amend building by-laws to check the construction of high-rise buildings in Shimla, a minister said Wednesday.
“We are planning to bring amendments to the Himachal Pradesh Town and Country Planning Act of 1977 and the Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act of 1994,” state Town and Country Planning Minister Mohinder Singh said in the state assembly.
He said the new amendments would have stringent provisions to check the constructions high-rises in the hill town.
At present there are 187 buildings in Shimla, each having more than five storeys, Singh said. These include a 12-storey commercial building being constructed by Jagson International Ltd, eight-storey building of the Oberoi group’s five-star hotel Cecil and 10-storey building of the Himachal Pradesh High Court.
Shimla legislator Suresh Bhardwaj expressed concern over the permission given to Jagson International Ltd to construct the Jakhoo ropeway in the wooded area of Jakhu, causing huge loss of forest wealth.
