Himachal apple belt shifting due to climate change
June 2nd, 2010 - 10:50 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, June 2 (IANS) Himachal Pradesh’s apple belt is shifting upwards due to decreasing chilling hours and increasing temperature from November to March, says a study.
The study, by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), said: “New areas of apple cultivation have appeared in Lahaul and Spitti and the upper reaches of Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh.”
The agriculture ministry released the study here Wednesday.
A rise in temperature reduces crop duration, increases crop respiration rates and affects the equilibrium between crops and pests, says the study.
