Haryana to open veterinary and animal sciences varsity
February 5th, 2010 - 12:05 am ICT by IANSChandigarh, Feb 4 (IANS) Haryana will soon have a veterinary and animal sciences university named after freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai at Hisar town, officials said Thursday.
The Haryana cabinet at its meeting here Thursday approved the draft of a legislation for the university.
“This university will have six attached colleges that will provide specialised studies in veterinary sciences, animal sciences, animal bio-technology, bio-medical research, dairy technology and fishery sciences,” a government spokesperson here Thursday.
The proposed university will provide training and research opportunities in various fields of veterinary and animal sciences.
“This university will be of great significance in Haryana as this state is primarily an agricultural state with 70 per cent population engaged in agriculture and allied activities. Haryana produces 5.6 per cent of the country’s total milk production,” the spokesman said.
He added that the veterinary education has not kept pace with the recent scientific developments in the country.
“There is also inadequate research and extension activities as veterinary colleges are part of the agricultural universities where priority remains crop production. Therefore, it was necessary to set up an independent veterinary university in Haryana,” the spokesman said.
