Chandigarh, June 8 (IANS) The nuclear power plant proposed to be set up in Haryana’s Fatehabad district will benefit the state and the region, Congress leader Ashok Tanwar said here Wednesday.

While a section of farmers in Kumharia and Gorakhpur villages of Fatehabad is agitating in recent months against the acquisition of their agricultural land for the nuclear power plant, Tanwar, parliament member from Sirsa, claimed that over 85 percent of the farmers had agreed to give their land for the project.

Tanwar said: “It would be the first nuclear plant in north India and will give new impetus to the development in this backward area. About 85 to 90 percent of farmers have already agreed to give their land for this project.”

He also said that negotiations were on between the state government and the remaining farmers for the acquisition of land.

According to Tanwar, the nuclear power plant was necessary not only for the development of this area, but also for the development of the state and the country.

He appealed to the farmers not to indulge in unwarranted agitation and to take the issue of development seriously.
