Chandigarh, Nov 29 (IANS) Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda Sunday said his government has set a target of doubling agricultural production by 2020, and urged scientists to develop better technology to help farmers.
“To bring about a second green revolution in the state, scientists will have to develop modern equipment and seeds capable of yielding more but consuming less water,” Hooda said in an address to farmers and scientists at a conference on agriculture.

“Farmers should take up double crop cultivation to increase food grain production and their income as well,” he said at the “Agriconclave and Agromax Haryana-2009″ conference at Hisar, 300 km from here.

Maintaining that the country needed a second green revolution, he said the onus lay on farmers, agriculture scientists and industry.

The chief minister also noted that water resources in the state were fast depleting and that agricultural output has been stagnating over the past few years, which he said was a matter of great concern.

Haryana and Punjab together contribute over 50 percent of the country’s total food grain production.
