Mamata Banerjee Kolkata, Nov 26 (IANS) A handloom training institute will soon come up in West Bengal’s Nadia district, state Textile and Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Manas Bhunia said Saturday.

“We are hoping to start the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) soon in West Bengal,” Bhunia told reporters on the sidelines of a programme organised by the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce here.

Disclosing that the proposal for setting up the institute was placed during the previous Left Front government, he said: “But, they (the CPI-M led Left Front) failed to execute it. After coming to the power, we have written to the union finance minister and the textile minister to set up an IIHT in the state. The central government is thinking positive.”

The minister said there were about 7.5 lakh handloom workers in the state and they would benefit after the institute comes up.

The proposed institute will be set up at Shantipur in Nadia district.

IIHTs provide short-term and long-term training to technical personnel to be employed in the handloom sector.

There are five such institutes in the country - at Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Salem (Tamil Nadu), Guwahati (Assam), Jodhpur (Rajasthan) and Bargarh (Odisha).

Earlier this month, union Commerce and Textile Minister Anand Sharma held a meeting with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and she urged the central government for an aid in order to develop a handloom institute along with two textile parks.
