New Delhi, June 5 (IANS) The public-sector Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has sought extra funds for a separate helicopter division and more manpower in a vision document and perspective plan for the next five years presented to the defence minister, an HAL official said Thursday. The total investment expected, in the plan submitted Wednesday, is Rs.220 billion and the manpower would be increased from the current 30,000 to 46,000 by 2012, the official said.
A sum of Rs.4.35 billion has been requested for designing and developing helicopters, which is going to be one of the core HAL activities this year, the official said.
Out of the expected $4 billion turnover of HAL, the helicopter division will alone contribute $1 billion. HAL will have the transfer of technology (ToT) for maintenance for the 197 helicopters out of the order for 384 for the army and the air force.
The HAL will produce 197 of the 5.5 tonne helicopters through joint ventures, design and development and outsourcing, while the rest will be purchased off-the-shelf, for both the services.
