Haitian Prime Minister ousted over spiralling food pricesApril 13th, 2008 - 4:33 pm ICT by admin
Port-au-Prince, April 13 (ANI): Haitian Prime Minister Jacques-Edouard Alexis has been ousted in a no confidence vote over spiralling food and fuel prices in the country.
Alexiss ouster came after violent demonstrations over soaring prices of food items and fuel.
Alexis was a close ally of President Rene Preval, and his removal by the Senate during a Saturday session in Port-au-Prince signalled censure of Preval as well.
On Tuesday, protesters had stormed the National Palace demanding Prevals resignation.
I think that will satisfy the people, opposition lawmaker Yuri Latortue was quoted by the Los Angeles Times, as saying.
According to an estimate, in Haiti, food items have become 40 per cent costlier in the last one year. (ANI)
