Gurgaon ropes in NGOs to sterilise stray dogs
August 28th, 2009 - 2:11 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Chandigarh, Aug 28 (IANS) Civic authorities in Gurgaon, adjacent to the national capital, have roped in two NGOs to check the population of stray dogs by sterilising the animals, an official said Friday.
The municipal corporation of Gurgaon, which is referred to as Haryana’s millennium city, has signed a memorandum of understanding with two NGOs Friendicoes and People for Animals for the task.
“We have divided Gurgaon city between these two NGOs for the purpose of sterilisation of stray dogs. As per the MoU, every month Friendicoes would get 400 stray dogs sterilised whereas People for Animals would sterilise 300 dogs,” said Rajesh Khullar, Gurgaon municipal commissioner.
“The workers of these NGOs would take stray dogs to adjoining villages. After three to seven days, the dogs would be released back in the same locality from where they were captured for sterilisation,” he added.
Municipal corporation officials had held a meeting with Residents’ Welfare Associations (RWA) in Gurgaon Thursday and informed them about the efforts.
They also suggested that representatives of RWAs contribute Rs.10 for sterilisation and immunisation of each stray dog to ensure their participation in this campaign.
“A cut would be marked on the ear of each sterilised dog so that one can make out from a distance. After one year, these organisations would again immunise those dogs that were sterilised,” Khullar said.
“Anyone can visit the places of sterilisation to check how the NGOs are operating. We are also ready to include other interested organisations in this campaign,” he added.
The city corporation also plans to build a cow-shed over an area of six acres by January 2010 to keep a check on the problem of stray cows as well, the official said.
