Gujarat cities get five national urban awards

Gandhinagar, Dec 3 (IANS) The Gujarat cities of Surat and Ahmedabad picked up between them five national urban awards, under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM) schemes, for implementing pro-poor projects and other areas.
Presented by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the national conference of the JNURM in New Delhi Thursday, Surat was adjudged best in four areas - Best Performing JNURM City, Financial Management, Inclusive Pro-poor Project Implementation, and Implementation of Seven Point Programme.
Ahmedabad received the award for BRTS Janmnarg - Best Mass Transit System Project.
According to Urban Development Minister Nitin Patel, infrastructure and urban housing projects worth about Rs.5,000 crore have been taken up in the cities of Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot in Gujarat.
