Growth constitutes just 3 percent of planning: Ahluwalia
February 5th, 2010 - 10:13 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New Delhi, Feb 5 (IANS) Growth constitutes just three percent of planning, which should be part of an inclusive process where the voices of many should be heard, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said here Friday.
“The current Plan has shifted the focus away from purely concentrating on growth, as increasing the country’s growth rate amounted to only three percent of the total number of things we should be focusing on,” Ahluwalia said at the end of a two-day national consultation.
“While progress has been made, this is not enough,” he said at the consultation on “People’s Mid-Term Appraisal of the 11th Five-Year Plan”.
Ahluwalia also asked civil-society representatives at the meet not to simply focus on the Planning Commission but also on increasing awareness across states and exert pressure on state governments to deliver social services envisioned by the Plan.
He was responding to recommendations emerging out of a nationwide consultative exercise, supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), to assess from a people’s perspective the performance of the Plan in achieving development objectives.
