New Delhi, Feb 2 (IANS) The central government Thursday decided to bear the cost of rehabilitation of around 10,000 families living in and around Srinagar’s Dal and Nigeen lakes who are being moved out for regeneration of the lakes.
The decision was taken at the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here.
It was decided that the government will rehabilitate and resettle the families living in the Dal and Nigeen lakes which are being preserved under the National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP).
During the visit of the prime minister to Jammu and Kashmir in 2009, additional central assistance of more than Rs.350 crore was announced for the rehabilitation of Dal dwellers.
The lake conservation plan was approved by the government earlier but it was stipulated that re-settlement and rehabilitation cost will be borne by the state government and this component is to be implemented concurrently with the main project.
