Government to launch the second JNNURM soon: Nath
September 7th, 2011 - 11:45 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Sep 7 (IANS)The government Wednesday said it would launch the second phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) soon.
“We will be launching the JNNURM-II in a short time. We have recived various suggestions to improve from the first JNNURM and to take it forward in areas such as urban transport,” Kamal Nath, minister for urban development, spoke at an event organised by Society of Indian Automobile Manufactures (SIAM) here.
Nath asked the automobile industry to come out with plans for upgrading urban transport by using new technology and traffic management. He also said that there was a need for more mass transport systems like metros and bullet trains to connect cities and towns around metros.
“We need more mass transport systems like metros and maybe bullet trains which should be outside the railways to connect with nearby towns in and around the mtro,” Nath said adding that the automobile industry has an opportunity to provide the solutions for providing end-to-destination travel needs of the commuters.
When asked about the monetary packages that were earlier provided to civic bodies to buy buses, Nath said: “Now apart from hilly states, I do not think that the central government should give money to municipalities in major cities to buy buses. These can be done by the banks as well as these are sustainable deals.”
