New Delhi, July 7 (IANS) Respecting gender sensitivity, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s cabinet Thursday decided to rename the ‘Inter-State Migrant Workmen Act’ as the ‘Inter-State Migrant Workers Act’.
The replacement of the term ‘workmen’ with ‘workers’ aims to make the act gender neutral.
“The act will become gender neutral by amending its title and replacing the word ‘workman’ and ‘workmen’ by ‘worker’ and ‘workers’ respectively,” an official statement said.
The act aims at safeguarding the interest of migrant labours and workers. The name change was recommended by a Task Force constituted for amendment of labour laws concerning women and children.
